Anachronisms that have found their place in Julius Caesar
The Atlantic’s article on the language of the film Lincoln explores many of the aspects of anachronisms in language. The author of the article, Benjamin Schmidt discusses examples of lingual anachronisms in Lincoln. Schmidt details how the slang, political, and martial words and phrases of the English language were very different in the past and just how off the mark many seemingly universal phrases are. This is very similar to the anachronisms in Julius Caesar because in both Lincoln and Shakespeare’s play, common place items and phrases are stuck into a time frame in which they do not belong. However, Lincoln’s anachronisms are far more subtle to viewers who are not linguists.
